According to Stephen Hawking technology is advancing so quickly that we within the next 100 years, humans will create artificial intelligence. But, is this an actual possibility?

Ex Machina is a movie directed by Alex Garland and was released on April 10th of 2015. Without giving much away, the movie is about a young coder that works for the world’s largest internet company (kind of like Google) and he wins a competition to spend a week at a private retreat with the CEO of the company. Once he is there, he chooses to participate in an experiment and he finds out he will be interacting with the first AI (artificial intelligence). If you haven’t seen this movie yet, you must.

Garland is known for movies like 28 Days Later and Dredd but Ex Machina reached a high point for him where he takes you to another word with beautiful effects. The movie is complex and it has questions that are left without answers. The biggest of them all, what would happen if humanity reaches the point where an AI is built? What will be of our future?

“Computers will overtake humans with AI at some point within the next 100 years…” Said Stephen Hawking at the Zeitgeist conference in London this year. Hawkins has expressed his concern for a while in regards this matter in several occasions but what is the real concern with creating an intelligent computer system that would allow them to perform tasks that require human intelligence and reasoning?

Hawking’s concerns could seem like a scary science fiction movie, that the machines will outsmart us all and thus, the end of humanity. At first the problem will be who controls this technology, but then the real problem will come with time… given a mind of their own, to perform their own actions and create their own set of ethics and believes, will we, humanity, be able to control them at all?

More basic concerns will be less job opportunities for humans and less and less human interaction.

Movies like Ex Machina point out the real possibility and the dangers of such creations for humanity. Maybe Hawking, one of the most famous physicists and cosmologist from our time can see our future clearer than most of us can pointing out the problem but giving us a solution along with it, to have the creators of such technology ensure that the technology stays within humanity’s control.
